Burntwood U17s came on strongly in the
second half to seal a good league win away to Wolverhampton after a
fairly even first half. Despite starting without their regular half
backs they won 10-3.
Jason Finch, who was outstanding in the line-outs, set up the ball for
the first try. Centre Russ Lingwood cut in for the score.
The Burntwood lads went on to edge the first period with sound defence.
They almost increased their lead but twice Alex Roberts lost control of
the wet ball when over the line.
In the second half Burntwood were totally dominant. Danny Smith, Mitch
Adams and Danny Hackett posed problems for the home defence but they
only had a Hackett try to show for their efforts.
In their only visit to the visitors’ half, W’ton scored a penalty but
generally Burntwood’s discipline was excellent. Stand out performer on
the day was hooker Sean Williscroft.
Burntwood U15s were not at their best to begin with at home to Rugeley
but some words of wisdom from the coaches put them straight and they
finished 31-0 victors.
The first 2 tries came from individual efforts by prop Liam Wallace and
then Dan Thornton who completed a strong run by stretching over. Mitch
Careless converted the second score.
Burntwood then began to play more like a team with driving mauls to
create space for Luke Briggs to dance his way through to the try line.
Careless converted.
In the second half the forwards drove close again and this time Cameron
Miles got the touch down. Careless converted.
The final try was another individual effort by Thornton following a
charging run. This proved to be the final score as the match finished a
little early due to a serious- looking injury to Tom Woodward.
Fortunately, his injury was not as severe as seemed at the time.
Burntwood U12's away to Spartans
Final
Score 31 - 12 to Spartans
With a
somewhat depleted squad and in a match fought more closely than the
final score suggests the U12's again put together a good
performance.
Playing
uphill and into a strong wind the U12's were unfortunate to be 19-0
down at half time, but then recovered well with tries by Joshua
Birch and Sean Latham, plus a conversion by Daniel Black closing the
scoreline to 19-12. As the end of the match drew closer and with
several of the Burntwood side having to play 'out of position'
Spartans put in some late scores, but this should not detract from
the U12's effort and performance. The outstanding performance of the
day was by Callum Grundy, who started the match by moving position
from centre to play fullback and then having to move again to play
at scrum half, a task that he fulfilled admirably.
