Earlier this week Burntwood Colts entertained Moseley Colts to complete their fixtures for the season. They played superbly to contain them and it was not until the closing minutes that Moseley scored a penalty and a try to win 8-0.
In steady rain which became a downpour at one point Burntwood began with the wind at their backs but it was the visitors who were on top, dominating territory and possession. However, the home defence stood up to the task, stopping the big Moseley forwards time and again.
The reshuffled back row of Gavin Smith, Russell Lingwood, Danny Hackett and replacement Josh Bayliss were the pick of a fine team effort.
In the 10 minute spell before half time Matt Wood put his side downfield and on the attack. The ball found Ben Holt and his mazy run took him close to the line only for him to lose his footing attempting a final sidestep going for the try.
Wood missed with 3 penalty kicks in difficult conditions before the break.
The pattern of play was repeated in the second half. Moseley stayed on top, mainly through the strength of their performance in the line out. However, the game remained scoreless with just 6 minutes to go.
Then ex-Burntwood player Liam Lloyd kicked a penalty to break the deadlock. As Burntwood tried to run the ball out of defence in the time remaining they lost the ball and Moseley gathered to settle the result with a late try.
It was a super effort by the local lads to finish what has been a good season for them.

At least one Burntwood side achieved a trophy win on Sunday. The U12s returned from the Wednesbury President’s Day as the winners of a triangular tournament involving the host club and Rugeley.
Despite missing several regulars due to the holiday weekend, the much-changed line-up quickly gelled with the newer members guided by the more experienced players.
Wednesbury were first up and they opened the scoring with a converted try following good handling and running. Once Burntwood settled, the forwards worked well and the backs ran good lines to score 3 tries, 2 converted to win 19-7.
They faced Rugeley straight afterwards. The sides have met 3 times earlier in the season with Rugeley ahead 2-1 on wins but Burntwood were warmed up and produced their best performance of the season.
The forwards again won good ball for the backs to use and they ran in 4 tries, 2 converted to win 24-0.
Try scorers on the day were Nathan Berrow, Ross McWalter, Callum Grundy, Luke James and Sean Southall. The conversions were by Callum Heath. The trophy was collected by skipper Brad Welsby.

The U14s were also in action at Wednesbury. They finished their season with a performance full of pace and power to romp home 63-5.
Forwards and backs alike moved the ball well and the home defence just couldn’t cope.
Try scorers were Joshua Tittley (2), Oliver Aleksejuk (2), Jake Read, Ashley Cockrill, Scott Minnis, Joshua Hall and Paulius Kananvicius. All 9 tries were converted by Luke Rookyard.
