On Sunday morning the
U17s returned to winning ways with a hard fought victory at home to
Burton by 17-6.
They faced the elements in the first half and spent most of it defending
but they shared possession to deny Burton any tries. The visitors did
land a penalty from infront but just before the break Danny Hackett went
in from close range to give his side the lead.
In the second half Burntwood picked up the tempo and went further ahead
when Matt Wood collected his own chip ahead to touch down and then
converted as well.
Burton responded with a prolonged spell of pressure, Burntwood not
helping themselves by giving away a string of penalties. However, they
only conceded a penalty to make it 12-6 going into the last few minutes.
Wood’s long range clearance kick put the visitors deep in their own half
and when Burton tried to run out of their own 22 the ball ran loose to
winger Gavin Smith who scooted in to the corner to seal the win.
Ben Bailey impressed on his debut at prop, Matt Fowler proved a key
figure in the second half and the whole side defended superbly when
under pressure.
Burntwood U13s also reversed a 2 match losing streak by thumping
Spartans at home 62-0, a result made even more remarkable by the fact
that Spartans won the encounter between the sides last year.
Back rower Ryan Percox was the star performer and he also helped himself
to one of the tries. The other scorers were Drew Adams (2 tries and 3
conversions), Troy Coleman (3 tries), Aaron Dunnet (2 tries and a
conversion), skipper Rob Jones (2 tries) and Matt Geldhard-Williams (2
conversions).
Special mention goes to K. Blacker who did well in control of his first
match as referee.
