Burntwood U17s are 2nd
in their league after defeating Willenhall at home 8-3 following a hard
fought contest last Sunday morning.
Facing the wind in the first half, Burntwood found it tough going
especially against a Willenhall pack which had the upper hand in the
tight play. However, the home side posed more threat in the backs – it
just depended on them getting enough possession.
With 15 minutes gone they did just that. The ball was moved down the
backs and Alex Roberts beat his man for pace to score in the corner.
Willenhall came back through their forwards to earn a penalty goal 10
minutes later.
Burntwood used the wind to pin Willenhall back in the second period and
the visitors’ discipline suffered, losing their captain to the sin bin.
Flanker Russell Lingwood made a superb 40 metre break which led to a
penalty goal by Matt Wood.
Willenhall were restricted to long range penalty kicks at goal which
fell short whilst Burntwood kept them at bay playing percentage rugby.
Even so, it needed a joint tackle by Wood and Ben Holt to deny the
visitors what would have been a winning score at the death. They
combined to force the Willenhall winger into touch.
Burntwood U16s were also in good form, beating Longton 31-0 at home,
scoring 5 tries in the process.
The pick of the forwards was Andy Edwards who also helped himself to 2
first half tries. Mike Cooper scored from a chip through by Adam Lampitt
and Ben Poulton went in from close range and Lampitt converted twice –
all before half time.
In the second half Longton defended well to deny Burntwood. The only
score followed some fine link-up play between forwards and backs alike.
They won a 5 metre scrum and scrum half Chris Massey nipped over from
close range for Lampitt to convert.
Wingers Dan Garrity and Nick Peplow both impressed and were unlucky not
to score whilst Alex Stowe put in some sterling work in the centre.
This Saturday Burntwood entertain a rejuvenated Veseyans side for a
league game at The Sportsway – kick off 2.15 pm. The 2nds travel in the
opposite direction and the 3rds are TBA. The colts are also back in
action with a trip to Bromsgrove.
On Sunday morning the U15s host Eccleshall.
