October 27th & 28th 2007 Match Reports

Burntwood Colts overcame their bogey team Willenhall away by 29-17 after a closely fought contest.

The hosts had the benefit of the slope in the first half but it was Burntwood who opened the scoring. A strong run by Danny Hackett set up good field position. The ball was rucked back for Josh Bayliss to touch down.

Willenhall, prompted by their lively scrum half, came back to lead 10-5 by half time. Twice he took advantage of handling errors to put his winger away for tries. The second cost Burntwood the services of influential outside half Matt Wood who suffered a dead leg when bravely trying to stop the winger in his tracks.

Burntwood’s reshuffle seemed to work instantly early in the second period when Gareth Wedge scored 2 tries in identical fashion, finishing off forward drives. Ben Holt converted the second for 17-10.

They should have added to their lead but failed to use overlaps on several occasions. Eventually scrum half Sam Cotter dummied his way in from a sniping run.

Willenhall responded with a try from their outside centre tapping a penalty to himself and crossing with 10 minutes to go. The conversion put them 5 points behind.

Superb defence denied the hosts and then Burntwood broke out to settle the result. Line out possession was spun down the backs for Danny Smith to ignore another overlap and side step his way in by the posts for the try. Holt converted.

Hackett and Cotter both impressed but it was prop forward Danny Green who turned in the best performance on the day.

Burntwood U16s travelled to Longton and produced some flowing rugby in awful conditions to rattle up 8 tries in winning 52-0.The home side were short on numbers and loaned 3 from the visitors’ squad

Adam Lampitt headed the try scoring list with a hat trick. He also added 6 conversions for a personal haul of 27 points. Gary Eccles scored 2 and there was one each for James Davison, Josh Chalice and Dan Train.
