Burntwood U16s
took part in an entertaining game at home to a strong Stafford side. The
local lads were up against an outfit fielding several county players and
so there was no disgrace in losing 45-13.
The visitors were 12 points ahead inside 10 minutes but good ball down
the backs saw winger Dan Groom go in for a try to give his side
encouragement.
An immediate response by Stafford led to the first of 4 tries by their
impressive No.8 who proved difficult to bring down. However, Groom was
in again as play went to the other end to bring his side back to 10-17
at the break.
With the elements in their favour for the second period, Burntwood
fancied their chances but injuries to Andy Edwards, Adam Hasker and Rich
Hoar disrupted their line up. Stafford took advantage to score at
regular intervals but the Burntwood lads kept their heads up although
their only reward was a penalty by Tom Evans, deputising for Adam
Lampitt who was off the field with a cut head.
It was left to Burntwood U14s
to enjoy that victorious feeling when they returned from a match with
Burton B having won 22-5 following a good game by both sides.
A well-worked backs move put Oliver Aleksejuk over in the corner for
Burntwood’s first try. The match then stalled for 20 minutes while a
Burton player was attended to following a collapsed scrum and neither
side regained their momentum until after the turnaround.
Lock forwards Dominico Angelakis and Ellis Gethin both broke through the
home defence within 3 minutes of each other to extend Burntwood’s lead.
The Burton full back hit back with a solo run from his own 22 to reduce
the arrears but more pressure from the visitors’forwards allowed Ashley
Cockrill to open the Burton defence on half way and score under the
posts for Joe Blacker to convert.
Man of the match for Burntwood was blind side flanker Ben Khalid who was
impressive in the loose play.
