Burntwood Development XV 57 Lichfield
3rds 0
Merit Table
With Burntwood’s league match called off due to an unplayable pitch at
Shrewsbury, attention focused on the Development XV. They were in fine
form, running in 9 tries against under-strength opponents.
The first came after 5 minutes when quick possession from a line-out was
moved down the backs for winger Dave Humphreys to score in the corner.
Craig Seedhouse converted.
There
was a repeat performance 5 minutes later with Pete Reynolds feeding the
backs from a line-out and Humphreys was in again although Seedhouse
missed with the conversion.
Sam Wanty was unlucky not to be awarded a try due to the referee having
fallen over and therefore being unsighted. However, it was only a short
reprieve for Lichfield as Lloyd Shelley intercepted off the back of a
line-out to race clean away from the halfway line for the 3rd try after
just 15 minutes.
Wanty made up for his earlier disappointment with a smartly-taken try
following good approach work from Martin Ottey, Reynolds and Seedhouse.
Wanty began the move which led to the next score after 28 minutes. The
move was carried on by Ash Stanton, Mark Partridge and Seedhouse who fed
Shelley for his 2nd touchdown. Seedhouse converted.
The final try of the half came from another sweeping move this time
begun by Humphreys. Seedhouse and Shelley were involved before a
well-timed pass put Stanton away. Seedhouse converted to make it 36-0 at
the break.
Stanton swapped sides after the turnaround to help even up the numbers
but the hosts’ score continued to mount just 2 minutes into the half.
Unfortunately, skipper Simon Edwards’s try went largely unnoticed as a
hot air balloon drifted at low level over the pitch. Seedhouse
converted.
Play
was more evenly contested for a 20 minutes spell until Reynolds skipped
inside for a try under the sticks which Seedhouse converted to post the
half century.
Straight from the restart a good passing move was finished off by John
Haire and Seedhouse added the extras to conclude the scoring.
With the visitors further depleted by injuries, the referee brought
proceedings to a halt 15 minutes early.

Burntwood 3rds acquired Tamworth 3rds away from the fixture pool and
after a well-contested and at times heated battle, returned with a 14-10
victory.
The hosts scored first with an interception try against the flow of
play. They hit back with a try from Matt Lee, converted by Adam Ansell.
As the exchanges became more fractious, Tamworth lost a player to the
sin bin but Burntwood couldn’t make their advantage tell before the
break.
The visitors kept Tamworth in their own half for much of the second
period but they conceded their 2nd interception try with just 8 minutes
left. After a lot of pressure, Burntwood scored the clincher with only 2
minutes to go.
A home kick was fielded by Craig Addy who fed skipper Ade Williams. His
miss pass found Jamie Horton and the youngster ran round behind the
posts to touchdown. Ansell converted.
Burntwood Colts disappointingly lost their Staffs Cup quarter final tie
away to Willenhall by 13-10 having led until the closing minutes.
It was a hard-fought contest with the sides generally cancelling each
other out. Burntwood scored first when Sam Cotter chased a kick which
the home full back missed. He went in under the posts for Chris Garner
to convert. Garner extended the lead with a penalty to put his side 10
points up after 20 minutes.
Willenhall came back into it and their forwards mauled their way over
for a try just before half time.
They narrowed the deficit with a penalty 20 minutes into the second
period and then clinched their passage into the semi-final with a late
try, again from a rolling maul by their forwards.
Danny Hackett was one of the few players to make headway with the ball
in a tight game whilst Mitch Adams was the pick of the backs.
All the junior matches scheduled for Sunday morning were frozen off.
Burntwood will attempt to play their postponed league game at Shrewsbury
this Saturday. It means that their Staffs Intermediate Cup tie against
Leek will probably be moved to 3rd January. The Development XV are TBA,
the 3rds are in Merit Table action away to Warley 2nds and the colts
have a league game at Rugeley.
On Sunday morning the U17s are away to Walsall, the U16s are at
Handsworth, the U15s host Newcastle, the U13s are at home to Leek - all
league games - and the U12s welcome Newport.
