Trentham 2nds 0 Burntwood
Development XV 76
With the first team not in action it was a chance for the Development XV
to hog the headlines and they did it in fine style with a 12 try display
at Trentham.
The whole side impressed with their handling and support play and
unfortunately for Trentham, Burntwood had one of those days when all the
passes stuck and virtually everything they tried came off.
It
took 14 minutes for Amrit Derry’s side to get off the mark. It was the
skipper himself who stole a Trentham line out to set his side on the
attack. Good support play by openside flanker Alex Reffel earned him the
touchdown and Steve Blockley added the conversion.
Just 2 minutes later and the lead was doubled. Craig Seedhouse tapped a
penalty to himself and evaded would-be tacklers in a run to the posts.
Blockley converted.
Near the half hour, the same duo scored again, this time making good use
of line out possession and a miss move in the backs.
Brimming with confidence, Burntwood ran the ball at every opportunity. A
multi-handling move which included Johnny Haire in from full back, sent
centre John Bromwich in for the 4th try. Blockley added the extras for
28-0.
Right on the half time whistle, Danny Hackett who was a constant threat
to the home defence, began and finished a move with a typically strong
run. Blockley maintained his 100% kicking record to give Burntwood a 35
point lead.
The visitors introduced Ben Holt, Adam Ansell and Dave Peplow for the
second half and they slotted in quickly as the tries kept coming.
Hackett scored a second having been fed by Holt from turnover ball. He
was grounded just short of the line but had the good sense to release
then re-gather the ball to score.
From the restart, Hackett returned the favour by making a lot of ground
then putting Holt in for the score. Seedhouse converted.
To complete a 17 point scoring burst in just 5 minutes, Bromwich made a
break from the kick off. He was supported by Holt and Tony Davies before
Blockley chased a chip through to the line to take Burntwood past the 50
point mark.
At this point skipper Derry was injured and replaced and there was a
change in the front row with Gareth Wedge coming on for Andy Miles, the
latter having done well on his debut for the side.
With the game drawing to a conclusion after Trentham had enjoyed their
best spell of the game, Burntwood hit them with a 4 try burst in the
last 10 minutes. The first of the 4 was from a scrum on halfway. Anthony
Cadman broke with Peplow and Reffel in support. The attack finished with
Cadman taking a return pass to score.
Bromwich went in for the next, the ball having been stolen from a
Trentham ruck. Wedge kicked the conversion.
Hackett’s work for the afternoon was not over. Another powerful run
paved the way for a try from winger Adam Smith who danced his way over
the line.
In the last play of the game, Ansell outpaced the home defence for the
12th and final try and Haire drop kicked the conversion.
As the score suggests, Burntwood were in stunning form although they
will need to work on their scrummaging as it looked distinctly shaky at
times.

Burntwood 3rds were also on top form in their match at home to Barton
under Needwood 2nds. Beginning the game with a side mainly made up of
veteran players, the old heads had a bit too much for the younger
visitors and they won 35-15.
Despite being under pressure in the scrums, Burntwood started well,
especially the back division in which centres James Hemingway and Paul
Lee were prominent.
The forwards were well served by Bobby Proud in the front row, the
Jarrett brothers, Mark and Dave, and by the immense Pete Reynolds.
Mark Bourne led his team well from scrum half and Mitch Adams impressed
in the unfamiliar role of full back.
Rob England, Reynolds and Adams were amongst the tries and there was a
steady stream of successful kicks from Craig Addy.
By the end of the contest, Burntwood had introduced all their
replacements in this club game and the younger players blended in well.
This Saturday Burntwood play their 2nd league game of the season away to
Veseyans. The Development XV are at home to Stafford 3rds for a Merit
Table fixture and the 3rds/Vets are TBA.
On Sunday morning the U17s (H) and the U14s (A) face Coalville and the
U12s are away to Eccleshall.
