Burntwood 2nds 27 Sutton Coldfield 3rds 7

The only match for Burntwood on Easter Saturday saw the 2nds run in 4 second half tries to overcome a useful Sutton line-up at The Sportsway.
The changeable weather conditions did little to assist the players but both sides tried to play open rugby, with the hosts having the better of a scoreless first half. Despite playing into the wind, they should have crossed their opponents’ line at least once but they were crowded out in the clubhouse corner.
Craig Seedhouse finally opened the scoring with a penalty early in the second half.

Scrum half Anthony Cadman went in for the first try from 25 metres. His convincing dummy to 2 players outside allowed him a clean run to the posts. Seedhouse converted.
Eddie Saunders added the next try after the ball was kept alive during a prolonged attack.
Adam Ansell’s determined run carried him to the line and he had just enough momentum to stretch over for his side’s 3rd try.
The last try went to young replacement Danny Hackett who made a good impression when he came on. He proved unstoppable from inside the visitors’ 22. A Seedhouse conversion completed the tally.
Special mention goes to the young front row of Rhys Corbally, Gareth Wedge and Chris Besant who found themselves up against seasoned campaigners and came through the test well. It was also pleasing to see Paul Rogers back in second half action after a long injury lay-off.

Burntwood U17s enjoyed their pre-Easter trip to Monza in Italy. They were well-looked after by their hosts before and after the game which Burntwood won 41-0.
The Italians fielded a bigger pack than the tourists and play was very even in the opening 20 minutes. However, once the deadlock was broken, there was only one side in it. Turnover ball was spun down the backs for Chris Garner to feed Alex Roberts who dived over in the corner.
The score inspired the forwards who showed more control. Danny Hackett broke from the base of a scrum to feed livewire scrum half Mitch Adams. His return pass saw Hackett barge over by the posts for Ben Holt to convert.
From the restart, Burntwood were almost in again but Gavin Smith was just forced into touch. However, from the Italian line out, Danny Smith was up quickly to intercept and run in from 30 metres. Holt converted.
Right on half time, following some darting runs by Adams, Gavin Smith squeezed over in the corner to give the visitors a 24-0 lead at the break.
Monza introduced fresh legs for the second period which stemmed the tide for a 10 minute spell but a weaving run from 25 metres by Holt carried him to the line for a try which he also converted.
Hackett’s barnstorming run from a scrum on the Burntwood 10 metre line was the prelude to a try for Danny Green although the latter was injured in the process and forced off the field.
In the last few minutes, Joe Cowling finished off a series of pick and drives by the forwards for his first try of the season.
Monza were determined to break their duck in the time remaining but the tourists were resolute to the end to keep their line intact.
