Burntwood Dev. XV 52 Wolverhampton 2nds
0
Of the 4 games scheduled for last Saturday, only one took place after
opposition cancellations so it was a strong second string which
entertained W’ton in a club friendly fixture.
Simon Edwards’s side dominated possession and they put it to good use
running in 8 tries in a performance full of strength and control. When
the visitors tested the home side they were met by a solid defence.
There
were 2 tries apiece for Mark Partridge, Matt Bray and Matt Wood and one
each for Ian Mapp and Ollie Whitehouse. Wood was in fine form generally
and also helped himself to 6 conversions.

On Sunday morning several teams from the junior section braved the awful
weather although conditions became so bad that 2 games, including the
U14s who were leading Hinckley 7-5, were brought to a premature
conclusion.
One game which lasted its full course was the U16s home fixture with
Willenhall which the Burntwood lads won 32-5.
They took the game to Willenhall from the off and went ahead with a good
try from Sam Preece who cut through the defence following a switch move
having had an earlier score ruled out.
Brett Taylor also needed 2 bites of the cherry before he was rightly
awarded a try. Dan Thornton converted.
Jack Lowe made an eye-catching debut when he came on in one of several
changes made for the second period by coach Antony Sutton. Within 4
minutes he was put away by Mitch Careless and he showed blistering pace
to reach the try line.
Rob Makin finished off a well controlled rolling maul for the next try
before Lowe was in on the act again with another sprint to the line.
Shaun Daley broke off the back of a scrum to complete Burntwood’s tally.
Sandwiched inbetween was a try for the visitors who went in from a close
range tapped penalty.
It was an excellent performance given the poor conditions and all of
Sutton’s growing squad saw a piece of the action.
Burntwood U15s were also up against Willenhall and were 24-5 ahead when
a fierce hailstorm brought the game to a premature end.
On a morning more suited to staying indoors, both teams took the field
and got stuck in. Poor tackling by the home side allowed Willenhall in
for the game’s opener.
However, this seemed to act as a wake up call for the Burntwood forwards
and it became one-way traffic towards the Willenhall try line.
A rolling maul was finished off by Scott Minnis to bring the scores
level. The conversion by Sam Power put Burntwood ahead.
The home backs threatened on several occasions but they failed to take
the right options which kept Willenhall in the game up to half time.
However, 3 tries within 5 second half minutes put Burntwood clear. Tom
Hall, Michael Pitchford and Oliver Aleksejuk were the scorers with Luke
Rookyard converting once.
The deteriorating weather failed to spoil a good day at the office for
the U15s.
The U17s were well beaten at Wolverhampton and the U12s lost at home to
Lichfield 24-5. Elliot Lawley scored for Burntwood on his debut.
This Saturday Burntwood resume league action when they welcome Moseley
Oak to The Sportsway. The Development XV and the 3rds are both away to
Rugeley and the colts, sponsored by the veterans, are at home to
Tamworth for a league fixture.
On Sunday morning the U16s host Spartans, the U15s and U13s are at
Tamworth and the U14s are at home to Leek.
