Spartans 2nds 0 Burntwood 68

Burntwood’s league fixture was postponed at the request of Bishops Castle due to a funeral for a senior club member. Instead they played Spartans’ second string at late notice and gave their confidence a boost by running in 10 tries.

The contest was not as straightforward as it seems as they played the first 50 minutes with only 14 men due to the late arrival of Lloyd Shelley who had been delayed at work. Ten minutes after his appearance the scrums went uncontested with the loss of a home front row forward which slowed the scoring rate.

The whole side built on their league win a week earlier, producing an attractive brand of rugby with the forwards providing quick possession and the backs combining to good effect.

Skipper Graham Shelley led the way with a hat trick of tries followed by Matt Bray (2), Sam Wanty, Lloyd Shelley, Steve Blockley, Beau Hildick and Rob England. Craig Seedhouse kicked 9 conversions.

Burntwood 2nds fielded a strong looking side at home to Willenhall 2nds but they lacked the cohesion of the visitors and were comfortably beaten 33-7.

Willenhall had the better of the opening quarter but made too many handling errors when in promising positions. However, they finally opened the scoring after 26 minutes following good work by their right winger. His cut inside led to a penalty which was tapped to a big forward who drove over for a converted try.

Ten minutes later Burntwood were level with a fine try. Mark Partridge broke from a scrum and fed Paul Rogers. Matt Watkins, returning from injury, provided excellent support and a change of angle to score by the posts. Eddie Saunders converted.

Willenhall retook the lead right on half time after the home side turned the ball over near halfway. They ran the ball left then a big pass back right created space and time for a try by the corner flag.

Three successful penalty kicks in the 3rd quarter put the visitors well clear at 21-7. The hosts had one attack which reached the Willenhall 5 metre line but it ended with a penalty against.

Their fate was sealed when Partridge was sent to the sin bin for the last 10 minutes. While he was off, the right winger went in by the posts for a converted try and then in stoppage time they got away in midfield to complete proceedings.

Burntwood 3rds came back from a 10 point deficit to defeat Old Saltleians 3rds 17-15 at The Sportsway. The visitors missed a late conversion attempt which would have levelled the scores.

Gordon MacDonald began the fightback with the 1st try. Nick West, who had a fine game in the back row, got the second from a pushover after his side opted for a scrum at a penalty award. Adam Ansell, who had kicked well from hand all afternoon, added the conversion to give his side the lead.

MacDonald made it a 7 point lead with his second try before a late Old Salts try left the result hanging on the failed conversion.
