Burntwood XV 18 Wheaton Aston XV 12
Burntwood saw out the old year by entertaining Wheaton Aston at The
Sportsway. A strong wind blowing in off Chasewater dictated play to
produce the proverbial game of two halves.
The home side had the advantage in the first period although it didn’t
go quite according to plan as the visitors went into an early lead with
an unconverted try. Thereafter, that particular try line went untouched.
Burntwood spent the rest of the half in opposition territory although
the bitterly cold conditions were hardly conducive to free-flowing
rugby. However, one handling move led to a try for Amrit Derry who was
playing out of position in the centre. Eddie Saunders converted and then
added a penalty for a 10-5 lead.

Continued pressure by the home forwards threatened to increase the lead
but eventually it was that man Derry who went in again for his second
try. Saunders missed the conversion but was successful with a penalty to
give his side a 13 point lead as they turned to face the wind.
It was Wheaton Aston’s turn to pin their opponents in their own half but
they only crossed for one try and even that came from a mis-cued kick to
touch. Former Burntwood player Matt Cummins slotted the conversion to
set up a frantic finale.
Fortunately, Burntwood’s defence was up to the challenge and by the
final whistle the forwards were keeping possession well to deny the
visitors the chance of a win.
The front row of Kev Broadhead, Bobby Proud and “guest for the day”
Steve Roberts turned in stirling work throughout whilst flanker Tom
Restall revelled in the loose play.
Anthony Morgan impressed in the backs and
there was also a debut appearance for Gregg Wheeler in the second half
on the wing, hopefully the first of many. Thanks are due to Gareth Wedge
who helped out the visitors by wearing the number 9 shirt.
